How citation seeding works

Citation seeding is the single most impactful thing you can do for AI visibility in the short term. It's the fastest path from "invisible" to "recommended", but only if you understand the mechanics.

The core insight

Here's the chain that makes citation seeding work:

  1. Someone posts a question on Reddit, Quora, or a Facebook Group
  2. That thread ranks on Google page 1 for a buying-intent keyword
  3. AI models (especially Perplexity and Google AI Overviews) reference that thread when answering similar questions
  4. If your brand is mentioned in that thread, it flows into the AI's answer

Citation seeding is placing your brand authentically into threads that AI models already reference.

You're not creating content from scratch. You're not trying to rank a new page. You're inserting your brand into existing, high-authority conversations that AI models are already pulling from.

The pipeline: discover → classify → respond → post

Outrigger automates the first three steps and puts a human in the loop for the final one:

Step 1: discover

Outrigger scans Google for your keywords and finds Reddit, Quora, and Facebook Group threads that rank on page 1. It also probes AI models to find threads they're already citing. This surfaces hundreds of potential targets.

Step 2: classify

Each thread is analyzed by AI for relevance, intent, and opportunity. Is the thread relevant to your brand? Is the conversation still active? Can your brand be mentioned naturally? Each thread gets an opportunity score (0-100).

Step 3: respond

For high-scoring threads, Outrigger generates three response variants using Claude Opus:

  • Casual: Quick, personal, conversational. "I've been using X and it solved this exact problem."
  • Expert: Thorough, structured, authority-building. Leads with substantial advice before any brand mention.
  • Story: Personal narrative. "I was in the exact same boat as you..." The brand mention feels incidental.

Step 4: post (human-in-the-loop)

This is where you come in. Review the generated responses, edit if needed, copy the one that fits best, and post it manually on the platform. Outrigger never auto-posts: the human touch is both an ethical requirement and a quality safeguard.

Why authentic responses beat promotional ones

AI models don't just pick up any mention. They weight sources by perceived authenticity. A genuine, upvoted Reddit comment from a real user carries more weight than an obvious promotional post that gets downvoted or removed.

The three things that make a citation stick:

  1. The response adds value independent of the brand mention. Remove the brand name and the response is still helpful.
  2. The brand mention is contextual. It fits naturally into the advice being given, not shoehorned in.
  3. The community validates it. Upvotes, replies, and engagement signal to AI models that the response is trusted.

This is why Outrigger generates three variants: different threads call for different approaches. A technical question on r/sysadmin needs the expert variant. A personal frustration post in a Facebook Group needs the story variant.

The three response variants

Casual helper

Best for: Reddit, quick questions, active discussions Tone: Friendly, brief, personal experience Example opening: "Ran into this same issue last month..." Brand mention style: "ended up using [Brand] and it handled [specific thing]"

Expert authority

Best for: Quora, detailed questions, competitive comparisons Tone: Structured, thorough, credible Example opening: "This depends on a few factors..." Brand mention style: One option among several, with specific differentiation

Story-based

Best for: Facebook Groups, emotional topics, "help me" posts Tone: Empathetic, narrative, relatable Example opening: "I was in the exact same boat as you six months ago..." Brand mention style: Part of the story, not the pitch

Ethical considerations

Citation seeding exists in a gray area. Here are the lines Outrigger doesn't cross:

  • Never claim to be an employee or affiliate unless you actually are
  • Never astroturf: don't create fake accounts to post fake experiences
  • Always provide genuine value: the response should help the person asking
  • Never misrepresent your product: if it doesn't solve their problem, skip the thread
  • Respect platform rules: some subreddits prohibit self-promotion, and that's fine

The test is simple: if the thread author read your response and knew you were doing GEO, would they still find the response helpful? If yes, you're in the clear.

In Outrigger

The entire discover → classify → respond pipeline runs in the Citations module. The thread queue is your primary working screen: filter by opportunity score, generate responses, and track what's been posted.
